For this assessment, you will usually be asked to do the following:

  • Take part in a small group discussion (3 to 5 people)
  • Give a short talk or presentation on a topic of your choice to a small audience and answer some questions about your chosen topic.

At Levels 1 and 2, you will be asked to research some facts and statistics on your discussion topic. You are allowed to have notes in your assessment, but you can only read short pieces of information from them (for example, statistics). You are not allowed to simply read from a ‘script.’

Different exam boards may have slightly different requirements, but it is a good idea to include some of the following:

  • Some facts/statistics/any other information you have on your topic (this may include relevant experiences and expert opinions)
  • Some personal opinions (preferably supported by evidence)
  • Questions for other group members.

Although a large part of the assessment is based on what you say in your discussion, you also need to take turns at speaking and to make sure that everyone in the group has a fair chance to speak. It is a good idea to ask each other questions (for example, “What do you think?” “Would anyone like to add to that?” “What are your experiences?”)
