General Information about Functional Skills: English

What do the levels mean?

Level 2 Functional English is around the same level as a Grade 4 to 9 (or Grade C, B or A) at GCSE. Many courses and jobs will accept Level 2 as an equivalent qualification to a ‘good’ GCSE in English.

Level 1 Functional English is around the same level as a GCSE at Grade 1, 2 or 3 (or Grade G, F, E or D).

Entry Levels 1, 2 and 3 are below GCSE level.

NB Functional English and Functional Maths are not offered at Level 3. However, it is possible to take A Level English or A Level Maths, which are Level 3 qualifications.

What do I need to do to achieve a Functional Skills: English qualification?

To complete a FSE qualification, you will need to pass assessments in three modules (areas of learning) at the level you are working on. These are:

* Reading (assessed by an exam)

* Writing (assessed by an exam comprising written tasks)

* Speaking, Listening, and Communication

Please note that different exam boards format their exams slightly differently to one another, so it is a good idea to ask your teacher which exam board you will be using.
